Statement of Mawla 'Ali, Mushkil-Kusha رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: Every person's suppuration remains veiled until he recites Durood-e-Pak upon the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّم and upon his Household.²

The Eminence of the First Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir ibn 'Abdillah رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا that we were present in the noble company of the Radiant Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. He declared: "At this very moment, a person shall appear before you of whom Allah has not created anyone greater or more exalted after me, and whose intercession shall be akin to the intercession of the noble Prophets عَلَيْهِمُ الصَّلَوةُ وَالسَّلَامُ. We were still present when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ appeared. The Master of the Universe صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ rose (i.e., stood up), embraced Sayyiduna Siddiq رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ and held him close."¹

3 Prophetic Statements in Honour of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Corresponding to the 3 Letters of ‘جنت’ (Paradise)

1.      "O Abu Bakr! You shall be the first person of my Ummah to enter Paradise."²

2.      "(O Abu Bakr!) You are Allah's freed one from the Fire."³

3.      "Love for Abu Bakr and gratitude towards him is obligatory upon my entire Ummah."⁴

صَلُّوا عَلَى الْحَبِيبِ      ﷺ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ

The Eminence of Siddiq-e-Akbar in the Words of Mawla 'Ali

On one occasion, the fourth Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Mawla-e-Ka'inat, Mawla 'Ali Sher-e-Khuda رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, was asked to describe the character of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. Mawla 'Ali replied: "He is the one, Allah placed the name 'Siddiq' through the tongue of Jibra'il al-Amin and the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. He was the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ chose him to lead our religion in prayer, and so we chose him for our worldly affairs too." He was then asked about Sayyiduna 'Umar ibn al-Khattab رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ.

Mawla 'Ali رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ replied: "He is the one whose name Allah bestowed as 'Faruq'. He distinguished truth from falsehood. I heard the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ supplicating: O Allah! Honour Islam through 'Umar ibn al-Khattab." He was then asked about Sayyiduna 'Ufhman رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. Hazrat 'Ali al-Murtada, Sher-e-Khuda رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ replied: "He is the one who is called 'Dhu-Nurayn' (i.e., the possessor of two lights) in the heavenly realm. He was the husband of two daughters of the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ, and the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ guaranteed him a home in Paradise."¹

May the mercy of Allah be upon these four companions, and through their intercession may our sins be forgiven without reckoning.

صَلُّوا عَلَى الْحَبِيبِ      ﷺ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ

A Brief Introduction to the Second Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Hazrat 'Umar Faruq al-A'zam رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

The second Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Amir al-Mu'minin 'Umar Faruq al-A'zam رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, his kunya is "Abu Hafs" and his title is "Faruq al-A'zam".²

His acceptance of Islam brought immense joy to the Muslims and granted them a tremendous source of support, to such an extent that the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ, together with the Muslims, offered prayer openly in the Haram of Kaba. With Sayyiduna Faruq al-A'zam's رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ acceptance of faith, the backbone of the disbelievers was broken. His awe was immense.¹

The Beloved of Rahman صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ declared: "I entered Paradise and saw a palace therein. I asked: 'Whose palace is this?' An angel replied: 'It belongs to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ.' I wished to enter and look inside, but (O 'Umar!) I recalled your sense of honour (ghayra)." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna 'Umar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ said: "O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ! May my parents be sacrificed for you — could I ever feel a sense of honour before you?"²

3 Prophetic Statements in Honour of Sayyiduna 'Umar Faruq al-A'zam رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

1.     مَا طَلَعَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ خَيْرٍ مِنْ عُمَرَ

"The sun has never risen upon a man better than 'Umar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ."³

2.     إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَعَلَ الْحَقَّ عَلَى لِسَانِ عُمَرَ وَقَلْبِهِ

"Allah has placed the truth upon the tongue and in the heart of 'Umar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ."⁴

3.      "All the angels of the heavens honour 'Umar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ and every devil on earth trembles in fear of him."⁵

A Brief Introduction to the Third Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Hazrat 'Uthman al-Ghani رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

O Lovers of the Companions and Ahl-e-Bayt! Sayyiduna 'Uthman al-Ghani رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ is the third Caliph of the Muslims. His kunya is "Abu 'Amr" and his title is "Jami' al-Qur'an" (Compiler of the Qur'an). He is also known by the famous title "Dhu-Nurayn" (i.e., Possessor of Two Lights), for the Radiant Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ

The Virtues and Noble Rank of the Companions and the Ahl al-Bayt

who is the light of Allah — gave his two daughters one after another in marriage to Sayyiduna 'Uthman al-Ghani رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ: when the first princess passed away, the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ gave him the second in marriage.¹

My master, A'la Hazrat رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ versified this Hadith in his poetry as follows:

Noor ki sarkar say paya do shala noor ka

Ho Mubarak tum ko zun noorain joda noor ka²

2 Prophetic Statements in Honour of Sayyiduna 'Uthman al-Ghani رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

·         "Generosity is a tree of Paradise, and 'Uthman is one of its branches."³

·         "Every Prophet has a companion, and my companion (in Paradise) is 'Uthman."⁴

Hazrat Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ explains the meaning of this blessed Hadith as follows: 'My special companion will be Sayyiduna 'Uthman; otherwise, many other fortunate individuals will also be companions in a general sense — as some narrations mention that Abu Bakr and 'Umar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا will be my special friends as well.'⁵

Sayyiduna 'Uthman al-Ghani رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ is Amongst the People of Paradise

Once, a person came to the presence of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ shook his hand in greeting and did not release it until the man himself withdrew. The man then asked: "O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ! How is Hazrat 'Uthman?" He replied: "He is one of the people of Paradise."⁶

An Introduction to the Fourth Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Hazrat 'Ali رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

The fourth Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna Mawla 'Ali Sher-e-Khuda رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, his kunyas are "Abu al-Hasan" and "Abu Turab". His mother named him "Haydar" after her own father, whilst his father named him "'Ali". The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ bestowed upon him the title "Asadullah" (i.e., Lion of Allah). In addition, "Murtada" (i.e., the Chosen/Selected), "Karrar" (i.e., one who charges and charges again), "Sher-e-Khuda" (Lion of Allah), and "Mawla Mushkil-Kusha" are his famous titles.¹

The Eminence of Mawla 'Ali رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

Statement of the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "أَنَا مَدِينَةُ الْعِلْمِ وَعَلِيٌّ بَابُهَا" — meaning: "I am the city of knowledge and 'Ali is its gate."²

The Beloved Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ declared: "To gaze upon 'Ali al-Murtada is an act of worship."³

The Beloved and Final Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ stated: "I am the city of knowledge: Abu Bakr is its foundation, 'Umar is its walls, 'Uthman is its roof, and 'Ali is its gate."⁴

The Eminence of Sayyidatuna Bibi Fatimatu'l-Zahra رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا

Statement of the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "Fatimah is a piece of me; whoever displeases her displeases me."¹

Statement of the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "She (i.e., my daughter) was named 'Fatimah' because Allah freed her and her muhibbin (i.e., those who love her) from the Fire."²

The Eminence of the Grandson of the Prophet, Sayyiduna Hazrat Imam Hasan رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ

The Sovereign of Madinah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ was gracing the pulpit whilst (Imam) Hasan ibn 'Ali رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا was seated beside him. The Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ would turn his attention to the people and at times glance at (Imam) Hasan رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. He declared: "This son of mine is a Sayyid (i.e., a chief); through him, Allah shall make peace between two great factions of the Muslims."²

4 Prophetic Statements on the Virtues of Imam Husain, Corresponding to the 4 Letters of 'Husain'

·         "Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ is from me and I am from Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. Allah loves the one who loves Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ."¹

·         "Whoever loved Hasan and Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا has loved me, and whoever bore enmity towards them has borne enmity towards me."²

·         "Hasan and Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا are my two flowers in this world."³

·         "Hasan and Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا are the chiefs of the youth of Paradise."⁴

Radiance Emanating from the Blessed Countenance

Hazrat 'Allamah Jami رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ states: The distinction of Sayyiduna Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ was such that when he sat in darkness, rays of light would emanate from his blessed forehead and both his sacred cheeks, and the surroundings would become illuminated.⁵

The Well-Water Overflowed

When Sayyiduna Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ departed from Madinah al-Munawwarah towards Makkah al-Mukarramah, he encountered Sayyiduna ibn Muti' رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ along the way. He submitted: "There is very little water in my well — please bless it with a prayer of barakah." Sayyiduna Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ requested a bucket of water from the well. When it was brought forth, he placed his blessed lips to it, drank from it, and then rinsed his mouth. He then cast the bucket back into the well, whereupon the water increased considerably and became sweeter and more refreshing than before.¹

Pouches of Gold Coins

A man once came to Sayyiduna Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ and complained of his poverty. He said: "Wait a little." Shortly thereafter, five pouches — each containing one thousand dinars (i.e., gold coins) — were presented to Sayyiduna Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ on behalf of Sayyiduna Amir Mu'awiyah رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. Sayyiduna Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ handed the entire sum to the poor man, and despite his generosity, even apologised for the delay.²

It is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari that Sayyiduna Anas رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ said regarding Imam Hasan رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ that he bore the greatest resemblance to the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ.³ However, this statement of Sayyiduna Anas رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ was made after the martyrdom of Imam Hasan Mujtaba رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. The meaning is: both princes resembled their blessed grandfather صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ most of all compared to other individuals; and between the two, Imam Hasan Mujtaba resembled him more than Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا. Once Imam Hasan passed away, Imam Husain became absolutely the greatest in resemblance.⁴ Imam Tirmidhi رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ narrated from Sayyiduna 'Ali رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ who said: "Hasan resembled the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ from the head to the chest, whilst Husain resembled him from below that to the feet."⁵

Son of the Exalted Imam: Sayyiduna Hazrat 'Ali Akbar رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ

(The grandson of the Prophet and Exalted Imam) Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ had three sons whose names were all 'Ali': 'Ali Akbar, 'Ali Awsat, and 'Ali Asghar. 'Ali Awsat is Imam Zayn al-'Abidin رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ. 'Ali Akbar and 'Ali Asghar رَحْمَحُمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا were both martyred at Karbala.¹ Hazrat 'Ali Akbar رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ was martyred on the plain of Karbala at the age of eighteen.² Hazrat Imam 'Ali Akbar رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ bore a likeness to the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ.

Some Individuals Who Resembled the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Apart from both princes (i.e., (1) Imam Hasan Mujtaba and (2) Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا), certain other noble individuals also bore a resemblance to the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ: (3) Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and his son; (4) 'Abdullah ibn Ja'far; (5) Qutham ibn 'Abbas; (6) Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib; (7) Muslim ibn 'Aqil ibn Abi Talib; (8) Sa'ib (the ancestor of Imam al-Shafi'i); (9) 'Abdullah ibn 'Amir ibn Kurayz; (10) Kabis ibn Rabi'ah ibn 'Adi; (11) Muslim ibn Mu'attib ibn Abi Lahab; (12) 'Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal ibn al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib; (13) 'Ali ibn 'Ali ibn al-Nijad ibn Rifa'ah; (14) Ibrahim ibn 'Abdullah ibn Hasan ibn Hasan ibn 'Ali; (15) Yahya ibn Qasim ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Husain ibn 'Ali; (16) 'Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah al-Khawlani. In addition, (17) Hazrat Imam Mahdi رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ shall also resemble the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. Furthermore, (18) Sayyidatuna Bibi Fatimah Zahra رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا also resembled her honoured father, the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. Eleven of these individuals are from Banu Hashim, making a total of eighteen individuals.³

Son of the Exalted Imam: Sayyiduna Hazrat 'Ali Awsat رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ (Imam Zayn al-'Abidin)

The second son of (the grandson of the Prophet and Exalted Imam) Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ is named 'Ali Awsat, widely known as Imam Zayn al-'Abidin رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ. He was not martyred on the plain of Karbala, for he was ill at the time, and he lived for many years after the event of Karbala. He is an exalted Tabi'i and narrated Ahadith from several Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ.

آمِينْ بِجَاهِ خَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّينَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ

صَلُّوا عَلَى الْحَبِيبِ      ﷺ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ

Son of the Exalted Imam: Sayyiduna Hazrat 'Ali Asghar رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ

The third son of (the grandson of the Prophet) Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ is named 'Ali Asghar رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ. He came to the plain of Karbala with his father Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. When the devoted young men of the pure Ahl-e-Bayt sacrificed their lives one by one for Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, the Imam was left alone. He entered the tent and brought his youngest son — widely known as 'Ali Asghar — onto the battlefield. A wretched man shot an arrow and he was martyred in the very lap (of his father). The Imam رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ let his blood fall upon the earth and supplicated: "O Allah! If You have withheld heavenly aid from us, then grant us a good end and take retribution from these oppressors."¹

The Wife of the Exalted Imam: Sayyidatuna Bibi Shahr Bano رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا

One of the honoured wives of the Exalted Imam, the cherished of Batul, Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, is Bibi Shahr Bano. She was a princess of Iran. The second Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna 'Umar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, conducted her nikah with Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ.¹

The Reason for the Name 'Shahr Bano'

When the fourth Caliph of the Muslims, Sayyiduna 'Ali al-Murtada Sher-e-Khuda رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, came to congratulate both of them following his son Imam Husain's رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ blessed nikah, he asked: 'What is her name?' It was replied: 'Kayhan Bano.' He asked: 'And what does that mean?' It was replied: 'سَيِّدَةُ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ' — i.e., the leader of this world and the Hereafter.' He رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ replied: 'سَيِّدَةُ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ فَاطِمَةُ بِنْتُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ' — meaning: "The leader of this world and the Hereafter is Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ." He then changed her name to 'سَيِّدَةُ الْبَلْدَةِ', meaning 'Shahr Bano', and she became known by this name. It was from Bibi Shahr Bano رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا that Imam Zayn al-'Abidin رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ was born. Her blessed grave is in Tehran, Iran.

 One of the daughters of (the grandson of the Prophet and Exalted Imam) Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ is named Sakinah رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا. She came to Karbala with her father Imam Husain رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ at the age of seven. She lived for a considerable period after the event of Karbala.
