Noble Messenger and the Day of Ashura

A day of ‘Eid

This day was the day of ‘Eid for the Bani Isra’eel. It is narrated that Sayyiduna Musa عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام would wear kattaan [fine linen] clothing and apply Ismid Kohl on the day of ‘Ashura.

(Lataif-ul-Ma’arif, p. 57)

The era of the Noble Messenger and the day of ‘Ashura

In the [pre-Islamic] era of ignorance, the Quraysh would fast on the day of ‘Ashura. The Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم would also fast on this day (Bukhari, vol. 1, p. 656, Hadees 2002) and the cover of the sacred Ka’bah would be changed on this very day.

(Bukhari, vol. 1, p. 536, Hadees 1592)

A large number of Jews inhabited Khayber and Madinah Munawwarah. Since they belonged to the Bani Isra’eel, and the Bani Isra’eel attained salvation on the day of ‘Ashura from Fir’awn, hence, they would commemorate this day as an ‘Eid and would fast on this day.

(Lataif-ul-Ma'arif, pp. 57-58 summarised)

When the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, he saw that the Jews also kept a fast on the day of ‘Ashura. He صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم asked, ‘Why do you fast on this day?’ The Jews humbly replied, ‘This is the day of greatness. This is that day on which Allah Almighty granted salvation to the Bani Isra’eel and Sayyiduna Musa (from their enemy, Fir’awn). So, Sayyiduna Musa عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام kept a fast on this day out of gratitude and we also keep a fast on this day.’ The Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم stated, ‘We are more deserving of Sayyiduna Musa عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام than you.’ Hence, he صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم kept a fast on that day and commanded people to keep a fast.’

(Muslim, p. 441, Hadees 2658, summarised)

The fast of ‘Ashura was Fard

Dear Islamic brothers! Initially, the fast of ‘Ashura was Fard for Muslims, then the fasts of Ramadan abrogated its obligation.

(Mirat-ul-Manajih, vol. 3, p. 180)

Although the fast of ‘Ashura is no longer Fard, yet there is great reward for the one who keeps the fast of that day.

Two saying of the Noble Prophet ﷺ:

  • ‘I anticipate from Allah Almighty that the fast of ‘Ashura will wipe away the sins of the previous year.’
  • ‘The fast of ‘Ashura is equal to a year’s worth of fasts.’

One day before or one day after

The King of Madinah, the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم stated, ‘Keep the fast of the day of ‘Ashura and oppose the Jews in it; keep the fast of one day before or after the day of ‘Ashura.’

(Musnad Ahmad, vol. 1, p. 518, Hadees 2154)

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Bin ‘Abbas رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا, a Sahabi and the son of a Sahabi, states, ‘I have not seen the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم seeking the fast of any day whilst giving it excellence over another day except for the day of ‘Ashura and the month of Ramadan.’

(Bukhari, vol. 1, p. 657, Hadees 2006)

The fast of ‘Ashura became a cause of forgiveness

A respected scholar was seen in a dream. The one who saw the dream asked him about his state. He said, ‘I was forgiven due to the blessing of keeping the fast of ‘Ashura for 60 years.’ It is stated in another narration that ‘due to the blessing of keeping the fast of ‘Ashura and that of one day before and after’.

The reason for calling it Muharram

Dear Islamic brothers! The first month of the Islamic year is Muharram. The name ‘Muharram’ was given to it due to the sacredness (i.e. reverence) of this blessed month.

(Tafseer Ibn-e-Kaseer, At Taubah, Taht-al-ayah. 36, vol. 4, p. 128)

Allah Almighty commenced the Islamic year with the blessed month of Muharram-ul-Haraam and has bestowed upon us many opportunities of reward, goodness, and blessing in it. He opened up ways for a believing person to become His favoured (bondsman) so that a person becomes close to the Almighty Lord from the very beginning of the year, and so that he repents, and his sins are forgiven. Moreover, the effect of good deeds remains until the end of the year, to the extent that one remains preoccupied in worship in the last month of the year, Zul-Hijja-til-Haraam, as well. It is hoped that obedience of the entire year will be written for him, because whoever’s deed starts and ends on worship, then the ruling of the one who remains engaged in worship in between both these times also applies to him.

(Lataif-ul-Ma'arif, p. 36)

Two virtues of Muharram-ul-Haraam

A person presented himself in the blessed court of the Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and humbly asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, other than Ramadan, which month should I keep fasts in?’ He صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم stated, ‘After Ramadan, if you are to keep fasts in any month, then keep the fasts of Muharram, as this is the month of Allah Almighty. In this month, there is one day in which Allah Almighty accepted the repentance of a nation and will also accept the repentance of others as well.’
(Musnad Imam Ahmad, vol. 1, p. 327, Hadees 1334)

The Noble Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم stated, ‘After the month of Ramadan, the most superior fasts are the fasts of Muharram, the month of Allah Almighty, and after the Fard Salah, the most superior Salah is that of the night.’
(Muslim, p. 456, Hades 2755)

The greatness of the first ‘Asharah (ten days) of Muharram

Sayyiduna Abu ‘Usman Nahdi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ عَلَيْه states, ‘The blessed companions رَضِىَ اللهُ عَنْهُم would revere three sets of ten days.

  • The last ten days of Ramadan-ul-Mubarak
  • The first ten days of Zul-Hijja-til-Haraam
  • The first ten days of Muharram-ul-Haraam.

The day of ‘Ashura

Dear Islamic brothers! The 10th of Muharram holds a special importance in this blessed month. It is known as Yawm-e-‘Ashura. One reason for calling 10th Muharram-ul-Haraam ‘Ashura is also because Allah Almighty favored ten Noble Prophets with honor and respect on this day.

(Fayz-ul-Qadeer, vol. 4, p. 394, Taht-ul-Hadees 5365)

The blessed links of the day of ‘Ashura

The day of ‘Ashura has a special link to the Noble Prophets

Sayyiduna Musa عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was helped on the day of ‘Ashura, and Fir’awn and his followers were destroyed on it.

  • The ark of Sayyiduna Nuh عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام stopped at Mount Joodi.
  • Sayyiduna Yunus عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام attained salvation from the stomach of the whale.
  • It is the day when the repentance of Sayyiduna Aadam عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was accepted.
  • Sayyiduna Yusuf عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was taken out of the well.
  • Sayyiduna ‘Isa عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was born on this day and he عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was raised to the heavens on this very day.
  • The repentance of Sayyiduna Dawood عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was accepted on the day of ‘Ashura.
  • Sayyiduna Ibraheem عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was born on this very day.
  • The weakness in eye-sight that Sayyiduna Ya’qoob عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام had went away on this very day.
  • Sayyiduna Idrees عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was raised to the heavens.
  • On this very day, Allah Almighty removed the affliction of Sayyiduna Ayyub
  • Sayyiduna Sulayman عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام was bestowed with kingship on the day of ‘Ashura.

Virtues of Muharram

Du’a for Reading the Book

Read the following Du’a (supplication) before you study a religious book or an Islamic lesson, you will remember whatever you study,

Translation

O Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ! Open the door of knowledge and wisdom for us and have mercy on us! O the One Who is the Most Honourable and Glorious!

(Al-Mustatraf, vol. 1, pp. 40)

Note:

Recite Salat upon the Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم once before and after the Du’a.

The excellence of Salat upon the Prophet

The Last and Final Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم stated, ‘O people! The one who will attain salvation quickly on the Day of Judgement from its horrors and accountability will be the one amongst you who would have recited Salat upon me in abundance in the world.’

(Musnad-ul-Firdaus, vol.5, p. 277, Hadees 8175)

Uff woh rah-e-sang lakh, ah! Yeh paa shaakh shaakh

The blessings of giving in the path of Allah on ‘Ashura

On the day of ‘Ashura (i.e. 10 Muharram-ul-Haraam), a poor person came to the Qadi [judge] in ‘Ray’ and humbly said, ‘I am a very poor person with a family, for the sake of the day of ‘Ashura! Please arrange ten kilos of flour, five kilos of meat and two Dirhams for me.’

The judge told him to come after Zuhr [Salah]. When the poor person came at the affixed time, he called him at ‘Asr. He arrived after ‘Asr, but he still didn’t give him anything and sent him back empty-handed. The poor person became heartbroken. Upset and sad, he came across a non-Muslim and said to him, ‘For the sake of the sacred day of today, please give me something.’

He asked, ‘What day is it today?’

Then the poor person mentioned some excellences of ‘Ashura. Hearing them, he said, ‘You have presented the means of such an exceedingly great day, please mention your need.’

The poor person mentioned the same need to him. That person presented ten sacks of wheat, a hundred kilos of meat and twenty Dirhams, and said, ‘This is fixed for your household and family every month for your entire lifetime for the sake of the excellence and greatness of this day.’

At night, the judge had a dream that someone is saying, ‘Look up!’ When he looked up, he saw two magnificent palaces; one was of gold and silver bricks and the other was of red rubies.

The judge asked, ‘Whose are these two palaces?’

A reply came, ‘If you had fulfilled the need of the beggar, then you would have received these; but because you sent him back (empty-handed), these two palaces will now be given to so-and-so non-Muslim.’

When the judge awoke, he was really worried. In the morning, he went to the non-Muslim and asked him, ‘What “good deed” did you perform yesterday?’

He asked, ‘How did you come to know?’

The judge related his dream and made an offer that take a hundred thousand Dirhams from me and sell me your yesterday’s “good deed”.’

That non-Muslim said, ‘I will not sell it even if I was given all the wealth of the whole world; the Mercy and Kindness of Allah is very great.’

After saying this, he recited the Kalimah [Declaration of Faith] and became Muslim.

Sixteen Scorpion Stings and the Extraordinary Sincerity of Imam Mālik

Scorpion stung 16 times

Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah Bin Mubarak رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has narrated that a scorpion stung Sayyiduna Abu ‘Abdullah Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ 16 times while he was giving a Hadees lesson. Due to the severity of the pain, his blessed face turned pale but he continued to give the lesson. (He رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ even did not change his sitting posture.) After the lesson ended and people left, I [i.e. the narrator] asked, ‘O Abu ‘Abdullah! Today, something strange appeared on your face. I noticed it!’ He said, ‘Yes! But I had patience showing reverence for the Hadees of the Rasool

(Ash-Shifa, vol. 2, pp. 46)

Sincerity of Imam Maalik

A great devotee to Madinah, Sayyiduna Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ was the first to compile a technically excellent book on the knowledge of Hadees. The book is known as ‘Muwatta Imam Maalik’. He was the embodiment of sincerity. Sayyiduna Shaykh Muhammad ‘Abdul Baaqi Zurqaani رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has narrated: After Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ compiled the book ‘Muwatta’, he put all the pages of its manuscript into water, saying, ‘If any of these pages gets wet, I will no longer use them.’ Amazingly, none of the pages got wet. This was the proof of his sincerity and the fruit of his true intention.

(Sharh-uz-Zurqaani 'alal Muwatta, vol. 1, pp. 36)

Love of Rasoolullah ﷺ Reflected in Character, Conduct, and Hadith Teaching

Complexion changed when hearing about Beloved Rasool

Sayyiduna Mus’ab Bin ‘Abdullah رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُ has said that Sayyiduna Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ was a great devotee of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ. Whenever anyone mentioned anything about the Greatest Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ, the complexion [i.e. the colour of the face] of Sayyiduna Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ would change. He would show deep reverence for the Beloved Nabi One day, he was asked about it, so he replied, ‘If you had seen what I see, you would not have asked about it.’
(Ash-Shifa, vol. 2, pp. 41, 42)

Manner of teaching Hadees

(Sayyiduna Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ started giving lessons of Hadees at the age of 17). Before coming to give a Hadees lesson, he رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ would take a bath, wear nice clothing and apply fragrance. He would then humbly come out of his room and respectfully sit on a throne. (He رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ did not even use to change his sitting posture throughout the lesson.) As long as Ahadees were taught and learnt during the gathering, aloe-wood¹ and frankincense were burnt to give a pleasant smell.

A Life Devoted to Madinah: Barefoot Steps and Nightly Visions of the Beloved ﷺ

Barefoot in MADINAH

The great leader of millions of Malikies, Sayyiduna Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ was a great devotee of Rasool. He رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ would walk barefooted in the streets of Madinah.
(At-Tabqat-ul-Kubra lish-Sha’rani, vol. 1, pp. 76)

Sayyiduna Musanna Bin Sa’eed رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has narrated that Sayyiduna Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ stated, ‘I beheld the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ every night.’
(Hilya-tul-Awliya, vol. 6, pp. 346)

Refraining from riding in Madinah

Sayyiduna Imam Shaafi’i رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated: In Madinah, I saw that there were some Khurasanian or Egyptian horses tethered [i.e. tied] to the door of the house of Sayyiduna Imam Maalik رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ. Those horses were given to him as gifts. I had never seen such beautiful horses before. Hence I said, ‘How nice these horses are!’ He رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ said, ‘I have given all of them to you as gifts.’ I said, ‘At least keep a horse for yourself.’ He رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ replied, ‘I feel shy of riding a horse on the ground under which the Holy Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ, the Beloved son of Sayyidatuna Aaminah rests (in his blessed shrine).’

(Ihya-ul-’Uloom, vol. 1, pp. 48; Ar-Raud-ur-Faaiq, pp. 217)

RESCUE FROM WELL

Sayyiduna Ahmad Bin Muhammad Salaawi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said: Once I was to undertake a journey. Before I began it, I visited the blessed shrine of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and respectfully said, ‘O the one who has been empowered to help his devotees in the world and the Hereafter! I will pass through deserts and jungles during my journey. If I get into any trouble, I will pray to Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ and seek help by mentioning your blessed name.’

I then visited the blessed tombs of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُمَا and made a similar prayer. Afterwards, I began my journey, travelling through jungles and deserted places for a week. During the journey, I fell into a well that had plenty of water in it. From the time of Salat-ul-Chasht to Salat-ul-‘Asr, I struggled hard to get out of it but could not succeed. My life was in danger. All of a sudden, I recalled what I had pleaded with the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and Shaykhayn Karimayn¹ at the time of departure. I once again supplicated, ‘O my Beloved! O Rasool of Allah! Fulfil my supplication and rescue me.’ I also made supplication in the courts of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُمَا in a similar way. In no time, someone picked me up from the well and sat me on its top! In this way, with the help of the Beloved Rasool I narrowly escaped death.
(Shawahid-ul-Haq, pp. 231)

May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ have mercy upon him and forgive us without accountability for his sake!

Ghayb-knowing Rasool gave GOOD NEWS OF RAIN

Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ who was a respected teacher of Sayyiduna Imam Bukhari رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated: During the reign of Sayyiduna ‘Umar Farooq-e-A’zam رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُ, drought¹ occurred. A person visited the blessed grave of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and said humbly, ‘Ya Rasoolallah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ!

Please pray that your Ummah be blessed with rain; people are dying.’ The person was privileged to behold the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ in the state of dream. He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ said, ‘Go to ‘Umar and convey my Salam to him and inform him that rain will fall.’

(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, vol. 7, pp. 482 Hadees 35; Fatawa Razawiyyah, vol. 9, pp. 695)

That person was Sayyiduna Bilal Bin Haaris رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُ a companion of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ.

(Fath-ul-Baari, vol. 3, pp. 430, Taht-al-Hadees 1010)

Sayyiduna Imam Ibn Hajar ‘Asqalani رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said, ‘Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has quoted this narration with proved authenticity.’
(Ibid)

May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ have mercy upon him and forgive us without accountability for his sake!

Son released from IMPRISONMENT

Sayyiduna Abu ‘Abdullah Bin Muhammad Azdee Andalusi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said that Romans imprisoned the son of a devotee of Rasool in Andalus, i.e. Spain. The devotee departed for Madinah Munawwarah with the intention of pleading with the Beloved Rasool On the way, he met some of his acquaintances¹ and shared his problem with them. They suggested that one could plead with the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ even while staying at his home. Visiting the blessed shrine in person is not a condition for the fulfilment of this purpose. But the devotee continued his journey. Eventually, he reached Madinah and was privileged to visit the blessed court of the Beloved Rasool After he said Salam, he expressed his wish. He was showered with blessings. At night, he saw the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ in his dream.

The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ said, ‘Go back to your city. Your wish has been fulfilled.’ When he returned to his country, he was greatly delighted to see his son who had really come back. When asked how he managed to return, his son replied, ‘One night, many prisoners including me were suddenly released from captivity in Rome!’ His father, the devotee of Rasool, made calculation and found out that it was the same night when he had heard the good news in the dream.
(Shawahid-ul-Haq, pp. 225)

May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ have mercy upon him and forgive us without accountability for his sake!

Excuse Accepted

Sayyiduna Abul Fadl Muhammad Bin Nu’aym رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated: Sayyiduna Muhammad Bin Ya’la Kinaani رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ would often humbly visit the blessed shrine of the Blessed Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ. He was also privileged to behold the Greatest Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ quite often in the state of dream. One day, while travelling to Madinah with the intention of visiting the blessed shrine, he suffered an injury to his foot. Unable to continue his journey, he wrote a letter and handed it over to a Hajj-pilgrim, asking him to place the letter near the blessed shrine and say, ‘Ya Rasoolallah It is an entreaty [i.e. heartfelt request] from Kinaani. You know what has prevented him from visiting your court.’

The person did as was advised. Sayyiduna Kinaani dreamt that the Holy Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ said to him, ‘O Kinaani! Your letter has reached Madinah and I have accepted your excuse.’
(Ar-Raud-ur-Faaiq, pp. 306)

Holy Nabi (ﷺ) came to see his devotee

Sayyiduna Abul Hasan Bunaan-ul-Hammaal رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said: Some friends of mine told me that in Makkah Mukarramah there was a pious saint known as ‘Ibn Saabit’. He visited Madinah Munawwarah for consecutive sixty years with the intention of saying Salam to the Beloved Rasool One year, he could not come to Madinah for some reason. One day, he was drowsing while sitting in his private room. Meanwhile, he was privileged to behold the Beloved Rasool The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ said, ‘Ibn Saabit! You have not come to me, so I have come to you.’
(Al-Haawi lil-Fatawa, vol. 2, pp. 316)

May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ have mercy upon him and forgive us without accountability for his sake!

Prayer for A’la Hadrat in Mina

If you feel admiration for any pious person and think positively that he is a beloved bondman of the Almighty, you should request him to pray for your forgiveness without accountability rather than for the fulfilment of any worldly need only.

My master, A’la Hadrat رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ would request saints to make prayer of forgiveness only. He has stated: (During my first journey to Madinah, I was present in the Masjid of Mina and all other people had left.) In the interior part of the Masjid was a man with his face towards the Qiblah, reciting his Wazaaif. I was sitting in the courtyard of the Masjid near the door. There was no other person. All of a sudden, I heard a buzzing sound like that of a bee. The following Hadees instantly occurred to me, ‘A sound is produced from the heart of the beloved bondmen of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ like the buzzing sound of a bee.’
(Al-Mustadrak, vol. 2, pp. 180, Hadees 1898)

Discontinuing my Wazaaif, I moved towards him to get him to pray for my forgiveness. I have never requested any pious saint to fulfil any worldly need. Instead, I always requested them to pray for my forgiveness. Well, I walked only two steps towards him when he said three times with his hands raised towards the sky and his face turned towards me: ‘اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِاَخِیْ ھَذَا، اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِاَخِیْ ھَذَا، اَللّٰھُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِاَخِیْ ھَذَا’ (O Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ! Forgive this brother of mine! O Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ! Forgive this brother of mine! O Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ! Forgive this brother of mine!) I understood what he meant, i.e. he did what I wanted, and he did not now want to be interrupted. Hence, I returned.
(Malfuzaat A’la Hadrat, pp. 490)

ASK FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL

Someone has stated: During my stay in Madinah Munawwarah, I was once hungry and had nothing to eat. I humbly visited the luminous shrine and said, ‘یَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ! I am hungry. Saying this, I sat down near the blessed Hujrah. A respected Sayyid came to me and said, ‘Come with me.’ I asked, ‘Where?’ He replied, ‘Come to my home so that you may eat and drink something.’ I went with him; and he gave me a big bowl of Sareed [i.e. a meal] with sufficient quantity of meat and olive in it. I ate well and intended to return. He said, ‘Eat more.’ I ate a little bit more.

When I was about to return, he gave me some Madani pearls of advice in these words, ‘O my brother! Just ponder! You people come from distant places, crossing jungles, deserts, oceans and leaving your family members behind. But when you are privileged to visit the blessed court of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ, you are left with only one purpose, i.e. Ya Rasoolallah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ! Grant me a piece of bread! O my brother! If you had asked for Paradise, forgiveness of sins, pleasure of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ and His Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ or any other great thing, you would have been granted them as well by the benevolence of the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ.’

Gratitude cannot be expressed for even a single favor

Sayyiduna Abu ‘Imran Musa Bin Muhammad Banzarti رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated: During my stay in Madinah, I once humbly visited the sacred shrine of the Holy Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ. Faced with financial problems, I beseeched: ‘یَاحَبِیْبِیْ یَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ! I am a guest of Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ and yours.’ Then, while sitting in wait for Salat-ul-Asr, I fell asleep. In the state of dream, I saw that the blessed Hujrah opened and three holy individuals came out of it. I wanted to stand up in order to say Salam to the Greatest Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ, but the person sitting next to me said, ‘Sit down. The Noble Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ is going to bestow the gift of ‘Salam’ upon Hajj performers and ‘food’ upon those who have no provisions.’ I said, ‘I am also one of them.’

When the Holy Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ came, Hajj performers were blessed with his Salam. I was also privileged to shake hands with him and to kiss his blessed hand. He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ then placed something like halvah i.e. a type dessert on to my palm which I immediately put into my mouth. When I woke up, I was still chewing it and feeling its taste. After I left, I came across a person who arranged for a conveyance for me without any fare. The same person also appointed a servant who served me until I reached Makkah.

When I woke up, half piece of bread was in my hand!

Sayyiduna Abul Khayr رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said: When I reached Madinah, which is the holy city of the Holy Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ, I had not eaten anything for five days. Saying Salam to the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and to his companions Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq and Sayyiduna ‘Umar Farooq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُمَا, I said humbly, ‘اَنَا ضَیْفُكَ یَا رَسُوْلَ الله’ i.e. Ya Rasoolallah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ! I am your guest.’ Afterwards, I went near the blessed Mimber¹ and fell asleep. As I closed my eyes, the ‘eyes’ of my heart opened. In my dream, I was blessed with the privilege of beholding the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ who was accompanied by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq, Sayyiduna ‘Umar Farooq and Sayyiduna ‘Ali-ul-Murtada رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُم. Sayyiduna ‘Ali-ul-Murtada کَرَّمَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی وَجْهَهُ الْکَرِیْم said, ‘Get up! The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ has arrived.’ I stood up and kissed the luminous forehead of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ in the dream. The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ bestowed upon me a piece of bread. I ate half of it in the state of the dream and found the remaining half in my hand when I woke up.

Beloved Rasool (ﷺ) BESTOWED BREAD

Sayyiduna Ibn-ul-Jala رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said: I respectfully visited Madinah Munawwarah where I had to remain hungry for a few times. I humbly reached the blessed shrine of the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and pleaded, ‘اَنَا ضَیْفُكَ یَا رَسُوْلَ الله’ Ya Rasoolallah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ I am your guest. Then I fell asleep. In my dream, I saw the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ who bestowed a piece of bread upon me. I started eating it. I ate half of it in my dream. Then I woke up and found the remaining half in my hand.

Beloved Rasool (ﷺ) BESTOWED DIRHAM

Sayyiduna Ahmad Bin Muhammad Sufi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said: I kept on wandering in jungles for three months. Even my skin was damaged. Finally, I reached Madinah Munawwarah and said my Salam to the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and Shaykhayn Karimayn (Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddeeq and Sayyiduna ‘Umar Farooq رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُمَا). I then fell asleep. In my dream, I was privileged to behold the Beloved Rasool You have come. Look what your condition is!’ I said humbly, ‘اَنَا جَائِعٌ وَّ اَنَا ضَیْفُكَ یَا رَسُوْلَ الله’ i.e.

I am hungry and I am your guest. The Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ said, ‘Spread [your] hand!’ When I spread my hand, there were few dirhams on it. Even after waking up, I found those dirhams in my hand. I went to market and bought bread and Faludah¹ and ate them.

Beloved Rasool (ﷺ) bestowed FOOD UPON HIS DEVOTEE

Dear Islamic brothers! Have you noticed! اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰہِ عَزَّوَجَلَّ, our Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ always shows mercy to his devotees, helps them when they are in trouble, and feeds them when they are hungry. Here is another parable in this context.

Sayyiduna Imam Yusuf Bin Isma’eel Nabhaani رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has narrated that Sayyiduna Shaykh Abul ‘Abbas Ahmad Bin Nafees Toonisi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated: During my stay in Madinah Munawwarah, I once experienced extreme hunger. I humbly reached the blessed shrine of the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and pleaded, ‘Ya Rasoolallah صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ! I am hungry.’ Suddenly, I fell asleep. Meanwhile, someone awoke me and asked me to go with him. I agreed, so he took me to his house. Serving me with dates, butter and wheat bread, he said, ‘Eat until you are satiated because my blessed ancestor Sayyiduna Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ has commanded me to show hospitality to you. Come to me whenever you feel hunger in future.’
(Hujjatullahi-’alal-’Aalameen, pp. 573)

Beloved Rasool (ﷺ) SENT FOOD

Sayyiduna Imam Abu Bakr Bin Muqri رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated that once he and his two companions Sayyiduna Imam Tabarani and Sayyiduna Abush-Shaykh رَحِمَهُمُ الـلّٰـهُ تَـعَالٰی were present in Madinah Munawwarah. They had not eaten anything for two days and were extremely hungry. At the time of ‘Isha, Sayyiduna Imam Abu Bakr Bin Muqri رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ came to the sacred grave of the Holy Nabi صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and humbly said: ‘یَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ! O Rasool of Allah, hunger!

He did not say anything else and returned home. He goes on to say that thereafter, he and Abush-Shaykh went to sleep, whereas Tabarani began to wait for someone. Soon, there was a knock at the door. When they opened the door, they found an ‘Alawi noble person accompanied by two servants with trays of food in their hands. That person said, ‘Perhaps you have requested the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ for food. He further explained, I had a dream in which I beheld the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ who commanded me to provide you with food.’ He then ate food with us, gave us the remaining food and left.

I have come to Beloved Rasool (ﷺ)

Sayyiduna Dawood Bin Abi Saalih رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has narrated: Once the caliph Marwaan visited the sacred shrine of the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ where he saw a person who had placed his face on the blessed grave. Placing his hand on the person’s neck, caliph Marwaan asked, ‘Do you know what you are doing?’ Turning around, the person bluntly replied that he was well-aware of what he was doing. The caliph recognized the person who was a renowned companion, Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari Then, he رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُ said, ‘I have come to the sacred court of the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ; I have not come to a piece of stone. I heard the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ saying, ‘Do not cry over religion if its Waali (leader) is capable but do cry if its leader is incapable.’

Blessed hand emerged from the luminous grave

After performing Hajj, Sayyiduna Shaykh Sayyid Ahmad Kabeer Rifa’ee رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ left for Madinah Munawwarah. When he reached the sacred shrine of the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ he recited two Arabic couplets whose translation is as follows:

When I was far away from your blessed court, I used to send my soul as my representative; it used to kiss your blessed court.

Now I am physically present in your court; please reveal and stretch your blessed hand so that my lips may have the privilege of kissing it.

As soon as he رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ finished the couplets, the blessed hand emerged from the sacred grave and he رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ kissed it affectionately.

Reply from Revered Rasool (ﷺ)

When Shaykh-ul-Islam, Sayyiduna Makhdoom Muhammad Haashim Thathwi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ came to Madinah Munawwarah, he humbly visited the blessed shrine, recited Salat and said Salam, so the beautiful and blessed voice of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ was heard: ‘وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ هَاشِمُ التَتۡوِیْ’.

Blessed voice of Blessed Prophet (ﷺ)

When Shaykh Sayyid Nooruddin Ieeji رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ visited the blessed shrine of the Noble Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ, he said Salam in these words, ‘اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ’. All those present there at that time heard the reply from the blessed shrine of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ: ‘وَعَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ يَا وَلَدِيْ’ (i.e. and peace be upon you, O my son!).

May Allah عَزَّوَجَلَّ have mercy upon him and forgive us without accountability for his sake!

Reply of Salam from inside the blessed shrine

Sayyiduna Shaykh Abu Nasr ‘Abdul Waahid Bin ‘Abdul Malik Bin Muhammad Bin Abu Sa’eed Sufi Karkhi رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has said: After I performed Hajj, I came to Madinah and visited the blessed shrine of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ. I was sitting near the blessed Hujrah (i.e. room) when Shaykh Abu Bakr Diyaar Bikri رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ came and stood with his face towards the direction of the blessed face of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ. He then said humbly, ‘اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا رَسُوْلَ الله’. I and all those present heard a voice from inside the blessed shrine ‘وَعَلَیْكَ السَّلَامُ یَا اَبَا بَکْرٍ’.

Holy Rasool (ﷺ) Helps the Helpless

A saint رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated: I left for Makkah Mukarramah with the intention of performing Hajj from Sana’a, a city in Yemen. A large number of people of the city accompanied me to the end of the city to bid me farewell. One of them requested me to convey Salam on his behalf in the respected court of the Holy Rasool Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna ‘Umar and other blessed companions

(The saint رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ goes on to say that) I forgot to convey his Salam during my stay in Madinah Munawwarah. When I reached Zul-Hulayfah and intended to put on Ihram, I recalled that I was to convey his Salam. Therefore, I explained to my travelling companions that I was to go back to Madinah Munawwarah to carry out an important piece of work over there and requested them to take care of my camel until I return. My companions said that it was the time of the departure of the caravan and I would not be able to rejoin it if I missed it. I asked them to take my camel with them if I fail to return before the departure of the caravan.

Thus, I returned to Madinah Munawwarah and conveyed that person’s Salam to the court of the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and the respected companions رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُم. By then, night had fallen. As I came out of Masjid-un-Nabawi, I came across a person who had come from Zul-Hulayfah. I asked him about my caravan; he informed me that the caravan had left. Listening to it, I returned to Masjid-un-Nabawi and made up my mind to join any other caravan. I fell asleep in the Masjid.

In the later part of the night, I was blessed with beholding the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُمَا in my dream. This is the person (who has missed his caravan for the sake of conveying Salam). Looking at me, the Holy Rasool صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ said, ‘Abul Wafa.’ I humbly said, ‘O Rasool of Allah! I am Abul ‘Abbas.’ He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ replied, ‘You are Abul Wafa (i.e. one who is loyal).’ He صَلَّى اللهُ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ then held my hand and instantly placed me in Masjid-ul-Haraam in Makkah. I stayed in Makkah for eight days before the caravan of my city arrived.

Green Horse Riders

Sayyiduna Shaykh Abu ‘Imran Waasiti رَحْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالٰی عَلَيْہِ has stated: I travelled from Makkah to Madinah with the intention of beholding the blessed grave of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ. On the way, I was so thirsty that I felt as if I would meet my death. Extremely tired, I sat under a thorny tree. All of a sudden, a person appeared, dressed in green and riding a green horse with a green rein and saddle. The cup he was holding was also green with a green beverage in it. Giving the beverage to me, he said, ‘Drink!’ I drank it in three breaths, but nothing reduced from the cup. Then he asked, ‘Where are you going to?’ I replied, ‘Madinah Munawwarah in order to say my Salam in the court of the Beloved Rasool صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ and Shaykhayn Karimayn, i.e. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna ‘Umar Farooq رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ تَعَالٰی عَنْهُمَا.’ He said, ‘When you get there and say your Salam, say to those three esteemed personages that Ridwan (the angel who is the custodian of Heaven) has also conveyed his Salam to you.

You have reached Madinah

Sayyiduna Ibraheem Khawwaas رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ has said: during a journey, I was so thirsty that I fell down someone sprinkled water on my face. As I opened my eyes, I saw a beautiful personality sitting on a nice-looking horse. He made me drink water and said, ‘get on the horse with me.’ after the horse walked only a few steps, the saint said, ‘look! What is it?’ I replied, ‘It is Madinah Munawwarah.’ he said, ‘get off the horse and go; say Salam to the Beloved Rasool (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and say that Khidar (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) has also said Salam to you.’

Forgiveness For those reverently visiting the blessed shrine

When Sayyiduna Haatim Asam رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ was present in front of the blessed shrine of the Beloved Rasool (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) he prayed to Allah almighty: “o lord عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ! I have visited the blessed grave of your Beloved Nabi (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ). May I not return with my wish unfulfilled!” a voice was heard: “o bondman! We have enabled you to visit the blessed grave of our Beloved Rasool ُ (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) after we have ordained that you be purified. You and your visiting companions have been forgiven. Indeed, Allah عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ is pleased with you and with those who have beheld the blessed shrine of his Blessed Rasool (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ).”

Forgiveness for the visitor of blessed shrine

on page 308 of the 413 page book ‘Uyoon-ul Hikayaat’ (part 2) published by Maktaba-tul-Madinah, the publishing department of dawat-e-Islami, Imam ‘Abdur Rahman Bin ‘Ali Jawzi رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ has narrated: sayyiduna Muhammad Bin Harb Hilaali رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ has stated: once I was present near the blessed shrine of the Beloved Rasool (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) when a Bedouin came and pleaded: “O Rasoolallah (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ)! The truthful book revealed to you by Allah عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ also contains:

وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ إِذ ظَّلَمُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ جَآءُوكَ فَٱسْتَغْفَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا

And if when they do injustice to their own souls (by committing sins), then O Beloved, they should come to your august court, and then seek forgiveness from Allah, and the Messenger intercedes for them, so they would definitely find Allah The Greatest Acceptor of repentance, The Most Merciful.

[Kanz-ul-Iman (Translation of Quran)] (Part 5, Surah An-Nisa, Ayah 64)

O my Beloved Rasool Repenting to Allah َّ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ for my sins, I am present in your court. I beg you to intercede for me in the divine court.” saying this, the devotee of Rasool started weeping and reciting these couplets:

يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ دُفِنَ بِالْقَاعِ أَعْظُمُهُ
فَطَابَ مِنْ طِيبِهِنَّ الْقَاعُ وَالْأَكَمُ

نَفْسِي الْفِدَاءُ لِقَبْرٍ أَنْتَ سَاكِنُهُ
فِيهِ الْعَفَافُ وَفِيهِ الْجُودُ وَالْكَرَمُ

1. O the best of the creatures whose blessed body has been laid to rest in this ground! The beauty and sanctity of your blessed body has made the ground and the mounds fragrant.

2. May my life be sacrificed for this blessed grave in which the Beloved Rasool rests! It has a great treasure of modesty, generosity, forgiveness (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and benevolence!

That devotee of Rasool continued to recite the couplets. He then left, seeking forgiveness for his sins with tearful eyes. Sayyiduna Muhammad Bin Harb Hilaali رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ stated: When I went to sleep, I was privileged to behold the Blessed Rasool (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) in my dream. He (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said to me:

إِلْحَقِ الرَّجُلَ فَبَشِّرْهُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَىٰ قَدْ غَفَرَ لَهُ بِشَفَاعَتِي

i.e. Meet that Bedouin and give him the good news that allah َّ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ has forgiven him by virtue of my intercession.

Good news from the blessed grave of the Beloved Rasool ﷺ

Ameer-ul-Mu`mineen, Sayyiduna ‘Ali-ul-Murtada كَرَّمَ اللَّهُ وَجْهَهُ الْكَرِيمُ has said:

Three days after the apparent demise of the Beloved Rasool (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ), a Bedouin humbly visited the holy grave. Throwing himself on the blessed grave, he put the dust from it on his head, saying: We have heard from you whatever you have heard from Allah (and that is)

And if when they do injustice to their own souls (by committing sins), then O Beloved, they should come to your august court, and then seek forgiveness from Allah, and the Messenger intercedes for them, so they would definitely find Allah. The Greatest Acceptor of repentance, The Moste Merciful.

[Kanz-ul-Iman (Translation of Quran)] (Part 5, Surah An-Nisa, Ayah 64)

O Rasoolallah (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ)! I have wronged myself (by committing sins) and I am now present in your blessed court so that you may seek forgiveness for me. a voice was heard from inside the blessed grave, ‘ َقَدۡ غُفِرَ لَك’ i.e. undoubtedly, your sins have been forgiven.

Excellence of Salat upon Nabi ﷺ

Umm-ul-Mu`mineen, Sayyidatuna ‘Aaishah Siddiqah رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا has narrated that the Beloved Rasool (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) has said:

When someone recites salat upon me, an angel ascends with the salat and conveys it to the court of Allah Allah عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ says, ‘take this salat into the grave of my bondman. It will continue to seek forgiveness for its reciter, and he will feast his eyes on it.

Aamaal Ka Daar o Madaar Niyaton Par Hai | Ikhlaas e Niyat Aur Hijrat Ki Ahmiyat

The Secrets of Spiritual Success: Worship, Divine Friendship, and the Awliya

Do This at Least Once in Your Life

Perform ghusl, wear clean clothes, and offer four rak‘ahs in such a manner as they deserve to be offered. Then place your face upon the ground in a place where no one besides Allah Almighty can see you. Then place dust upon your head and cover your face, the most honored of all your limbs, with soil. Do so in such a way that tears Flow from your eyes, your heart is immersed in grief, your voice is raised while your call remains soft, and as much as possible, remember each sin individually while reproaching and shaming yourself. Scold your nafs and say: “O Self Ego or Soul (Nafs)! Are you not ashamed? Can y ou not repent? Do you have the strength to bear the punishment of Allah Almighty? Do you wish to displease Allah Almighty?” Continue crying in this way, then stretch your hands in the court of your Most Merciful Lord and say: “O, my Lord! Your runaway slave has presented himself at your door. Your disobedient servant has returned seeking reconciliation. Your sinful servant seeks forgiveness from You. O, my Lord! Forgive me through Your generosity and accept me through Your grace. Shower me with Your merciful gaze. O, my Lord! Forgive my previous sins and protect me from sins in the life ahead. Indeed, all goodness is in Your control, and You are the Most Merciful and Kind toward us.

How the Heart Becomes Attached to Worship

Hazrat Sayyiduna Salman al Farsi (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) said: “When a servant becomes detached from the world, his heart becomes illuminated with wisdom, and his limbs become helpers in worship.” Hold firmly onto this statement.

The Enemy of a Friend

The world is the enemy of Allah Almighty, while you are among those who love Allah Almighty; and the one who loves someone hates his enemy.

The Status of the Awliya-e-Kiram

As for becoming detached even from halal things, this is the quality of the Abdal (the Awliya Kiram رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ ). Even from halal things, they take only what is necessary. As for haram, in their sight it is like fire, let alone taking it, even the thought of it does not enter their hearts.

Avoid Sin, Repent Quickly: The Blessings of Sincere Tawbah

It Is Possible to Avoid Every Sin If you say:

“How is it possible for a person to reach a state where he does not commit even a single minor or major sin?” Then you should know that not only is this possible, it is easy as well, and Allah Almighty specially grants this through His mercy to whomever He wills.

The Blessings of Repentance

By repenting, one of two great blessings will definitely be granted to you:

(1) You will be blessed with the ability to remain steadfast upon true and sincere repentance, or

(2) Your previous sins will be forgiven.

How Great a Blessing True Repentance Is

Hazrat Sayyiduna Ustadh Abu Ishaq Isfarayini رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ was a scholar who practiced upon his knowledge. He said: “For thirty years I prayed to Allah Almighty that He grant me the ability to make true and sincere repentance.” Then I became amazed at myself and said:(سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰهِ)! For thirty years, I have been asking Allah Almighty for one need, yet it has still not been fulfilled.” Then I saw in a dream someone saying to me, “Are you surprised by this? Do you know what you are asking from Allah Almighty? You are asking that Allah chosen servants. Almighty make you among His beloved and

Do Not Sin; If a Sin Occurs, Repent Immediately

You must never forget the matter of Shaytan and Bal‘am bin Ba‘ura (the hidden decree of Allah Almighty concerning them). Their affair began with sin and ended in disbelief, and both perished forever among the destroyed.

A Sign of the Heart Becoming Darkened

Do not become fearless because of the hardness of the heart; rather, continue reflecting upon your condition. A pious elder رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ said: “The heart becomes darkened because of sins, and the sign of the darkness of the heart is that sins no longer disturb you, opportunities for righteous deeds are not found, and admonition and advice no longer benefit you.”

Beware! Never consider any sin insignificant, and do not think of yourself as repentant while persisting in major sins. Reflect upon the words of this poet:

“Never consider even a small sin insignificant, because continuous repetition causes ‘a little’ to become a lot"

The Status of Allah Almighty’s Righteous Servants

“The one who repents still fears for himself, so what do you think should be the condition of the one who does not repent"

The Evil Effects of Sins and the Way Back to Allah

Although the valley of knowledge is extremely difficult, it is the very path that leads to the intended goal, namely, worship and salvation.

Those Deprived of Knowledge

The Beloved Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“On the night of Mi‘raj, I looked into Hell and saw that the majority within it were the poor.”

The noble Sahabah (عليهم الرضوان) asked: “Ya RasulAllah (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ)! Poor in terms of wealth?”

He (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) replied:

“No, poor in terms of knowledge.”

The Evil Effects of Sins

The one who is covered in various forms of filth and impurity, how can he attain closeness with Allah Almighty? Certainly, the person who persists in sins is rarely granted the ability to perform righteous deeds, nor are his limbs prepared for worship. The n even if he does receive the tawfiq to worship, he performs it with great difficulty, worship that contains neither sweetness nor delight, neither purity nor beauty. All of this is due to the evil effects of sin and the abandonment of repentance.

Sincere Repentance Will Be Granted

The one who cannot bear the heat of the sun, the slap of a soldier, or the sting of an ant, how will he bear the heat of the Fire of Hell, the blows of the angels of punishment, and the bites of snakes with necks like Bakhti camels and scorpions like mules , creatures created from fire in the abode of wrath and destruction (Hell)? Again and again, we seek Allah’s protection from His anger and punishment.

If you continuously remember these terrifying matters and keep their remembrance fresh morning and evening and during the hours of the night, then soon sincere repentance from sins will be granted to you. May Allah Almighty grant ability and grace to do good (tawfiq) through His grace.

The Cure for Sins: Learning, Practicing, and Avoiding Disputes

A Prescription for Staying Away from Sins

The fear is that when a person fears the painful punishment prepared by Allah Almighty, along with the various punishments and warnings of disgrace from His side, then this fear will frighten the Self Ego or Soul (nafs) away from sins and restrain it. Thus, at this stage, the servant faces the path of those things which encourage him toward worship, and in order to cross it, both fear and hope are needed. Therefore, with the ability and grace to do good (tawfiq) of Allah Almighty, the servant should begin traversing this path.

The Example of Knowledge and Actions

Knowledge is like a tree, and worship is like its fruit. The greatness belongs to the tree because it is the foundation, but its benefit is attained through its fruit. For this reason, the Beloved Prophet (صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

Knowledge is the leader of actions, and actions are its followers.

Learning Religious Knowledge Is Necessary

Sometimes you become involved in pure showing off,yet think of it as praising Allah Almighty and calling people toward goodness. In this way, you begin considering sins as virtues and actions worthy of punishment as tremendous rewards. Thus, you become trapped in severe deception and terrible heedlessness. By Allah! For those who act without knowledge, this is indeed a tremendous and terrible calamity.

Stay Away from Arguments

It is necessary for you to avoid debates, arguments, and tugging back and forth, because this is a disease for which there is no cure. Therefore, make every effort to protect yourself from it, because whoever becomes afflicted with this illness neve succeeds, except the one whom Allah Almighty covers with His grace, mercy, kindness, and favor.

To Control the Self Ego or Soul (Nafs)

To remove the obstacles that stand in the path of worship, four things are required:

  • Withdrawing from worldly attachment,
  • Seclusion from creation,
  • Battling Shaytan,
  • Opposing the Self Ego or Soul (nafs).

Among these, dealing with the Self Ego or Soul (nafs) is the most difficult, because separation from it is impossible. Nor can it be completely subdued through extreme harshness, as Shaytan can, because the Self Ego or Soul (nafs) is the mount and means through which worship is carried out. Whenever a person intends to perform worship and turn toward it, he cannot expect cooperation from the Self Ego or Soul (nafs), because opposition to goodness and following desires are part of its nature.

In such a situation, it becomes necessary to place the reins of God-consciousness Piety or Fear of God (taqwa) upon the Self Ego or Soul (nafs) so that it does not rebel and become defiant. Rather, it should remain obedient and submissive to the servant, enabling him to use it in righteous and beneficial deeds while preventing it from places of destruction and corruption. In this way, one should prepare to cross this difficult pass and seek help from Allah Almighty for it.

Repent Before Worship

When a person begins engaging in worship, he should look at himself and realize:

“I am covered in faults and sins,” And this is the condition of most people.

He should then say to himself: “How can I proceed upon the path of worship while I am immersed in sins and still persisting in them? Therefore, it is necessary that I first repent from my sins, so that Allah Almighty may forgive me, free me from the imprisonment of sins, and cleanse me from their filth and impurity. Then, after becoming purified, I may become worthy of worship and closeness to Allah Almighty.
