The Prophet ﷺ Intercessor: Authentic Sunni Perspective with Hadith Proofs

Hadith 3:

Ibn ‘Adī narrates from Umm al-Mu’minīn Umm Salamah (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

شَفَاعَتِي لِأَهْلِ الْبَكَائِرِ مِنْ أُمَّتِي

“My intercession is for those from my Ummah who have been ruined by their sins.”

Indeed, this is the truth!

O my Intercessor, may I be sacrificed for you!

May Allah send blessings upon you!”

Hadiths 4–8:

Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, Ibn Ḥibbān, Ḥākim, and Bayhaqī (with authentication) narrate from Anas ibn Mālik

Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, Ibn Ḥibbān, and Ḥākim narrate from Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh

Ṭabarānī in Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr narrates from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās

Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī narrates from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا) and Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

شَفَاعَتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لِأَهْلِ الْكَبَائِرِ مِنْ أُمَّتِي

“My intercession on the Day of Judgement is for those of my Ummah who committed major sins.”

“May Allah send blessings and peace upon you, and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”

Hadith 9:

Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ‘Alī al-Baghdādī narrates from Abū al-Dard ’ā(رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

شَفَاعَتِي لِأَهْلِ الذَّنُوبِ مِنْ أُمَّتِي

“My intercession is for the sinners of my Ummah.”

Abū al-Darda (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) asked:

“Even if they committed adultery and theft?”

The Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) replied:

“Even if they committed adultery and theft, despite the disapproval of Abū al-Dard’ā!”

Hadith 10 & 11:

Ṭabarānī and Bayhaqī narrate from Buraydah

Ṭabarānī in Al-Mu‘jam al-Awsaṭ narrates from Anas (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

أَنَّ أَشْفَعُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لِأَكْثَرَ مِمَّا عَلَى وَجْهِ الْأَرْضِ مِنْ شَجَرٍ وَحَجَرٍ وَمَدَرٍ

“I will intercede on the Day of Judgement for more people than the number of trees, stones, and clods of earth on the surface of the earth.”

Hadith 12:

Bukhārī, Muslim, Ḥākim, and Bayhaqī narrate from Abū Hurayrah

(The following wording is from Ḥākim and Bayhaqī.)

The Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“My intercession is for every person who sincerely testifies that there is none worthy of worship except Allāh, with a heart that affirms what the tongue has declared.”

Hadith 13:

Aḥmad, Ṭabarānī, and Bazzār narrate from Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal and Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

أَنَّهَا أَوْسَعُ لَهُمْ وَهِيَ لِمَنْ مَاتَ وَلَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا

“Intercession is vast for my Ummah, as it is for every person who dies without associating anything with Allah.”

Hadith 14:

Ṭabarānī in Al-Mu‘jam al-Awsaṭ narrates from Abū Hurayrah (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

آتِي جَهَنَّمَ فَأَضْرِبُ بَابَهَا فَيُفْتَحُ لِي فَأَدْخُلُهَا فَأَحْمَدُ اللَّهَ مَحَامِدَ مَا حَمِدَهُ أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي وَلَا يَحْمَدُ أَحَدٌ بَعْدِي ثُمَّ أُخْرِجُ مِنْهَا مَنْ قَالَ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ

“I will come to Hell and strike its door, and it will be opened for me. I will then enter it and praise Allah with praises that no one before me has ever expressed and no one after me will express in the same way. Then, I will remove from it every person who has sincerely said, ‘There is no god but Allah.’”

Hadith 15:

Ḥākim (with authentication), Ṭabarānī, and Bayhaqī narrate from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“Golden pulpits will be set up for the Prophets, and they will sit upon them. But my pulpit will remain, and I will not sit upon it; rather, I will stand before my Lord, fearing that He may send me to Paradise while my Ummah remains behind. So I will plead, ‘O my Lord, my Ummah, my Ummah! ’Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ) will say, ‘O Muhammad! What do you want me to do with your Ummah? ’I will reply, ‘O my Lord! Hasten their reckoning.’ 'I will continue to intercede until I am given the release decrees for men who had already been sent to Hell, to the point that Mālik, the keeper of Hell, will say: ‘O Muhammad! You have left no room for your Lord's anger upon your Ummah.’”

May Allah grant us the honour of benefiting from the intercession of the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) on the Day of Judgment. Āmīn.

Hadiths 16–21:

Bukhārī, Muslim, and Nas ā’īnarrate from Jābir ibn ‘Abdullāh

Aḥmad (with a Hasan chain), Bukhārī (Tārīkh), Bazzār, Ṭabarānī, Bayhaqī, and Abū Nu‘aym narrate from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās

Aḥmad (with a Hasan chain), Bazzār (with a jayyid chain), Dārimī, Ibn Abī Shaybah, Abū Ya‘lā, Abū Nu‘aym, and Bayhaqī narrate from Abū Dharr

Ṭabarānī in Al-Mu‘jam al-Awsaṭ narrates from Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ).

Ṭabarānī in Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr narrates from S’āib ibn Yazīd

Aḥmad (with a Hasan chain), Ibn Abī Shaybah, and Ṭabarānī narrate from Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ).

The narration follows the wording of Jābir (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) in which he reports that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

وَأُعْطِيتُ مَا لَمْ يُعْطَ أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي... وَأُعْطِيتُ الشَّفَاعَةَ

“I have been given that which no one before me has been given... and I have been granted intercession.”

These six hadiths state that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“I have been appointed as an intercessor, and intercession has been granted exclusively to me. No other Prophet was given this position except me.”

Shafā‘ah of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ Authentic Hadith

The Hadiths on Grand Intercession (Shaf‘āat-e-Kubra)

The hadiths on Grand Intercession clearly state that on the plains of Mahshar (the Day of Judgement), the Day will be unbearably long, the sun will be overhead, and Hell will be nearby. On that day, the heat of the sun will be intensified to the extent of ten full years ’worth of scorching heat, and it will be placed just above people's heads. The thirst will be unbearable, the heat unimaginable, and sweat will seep into the ground and rise back up, reaching even above people's throats. If a ship were to be placed in it, it would start floating. People will drown in their sweat, overwhelmed with fear and anxiety.

During this immense anguish and distress, people will desperately search for an intercessor. They will go from Prophet Adam to Prophet Nuh, then to Prophet Ibrahim, then to Prophet Musa, and then to Prophet ‘Isa (peace be upon them all). But each of them will say: “This is not my position. I am not worthy of this. I cannot do this. Myself! Myself! Go to someone else.”

Eventually, after seeking intercession from every Prophet, the people will arrive at the court of the Most Radiant, the Seal of the Prophets, the Master of the First and the Last, the Intercessor of Sinners, the Mercy to the Worlds, Prophet Muhammad

At that moment, the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) will say:

“I am for this! I am for this!”

“I am the one appointed for intercession! I am the one for intercession!”

He will then proceed to the glorious court of his Lord and prostrate before Him. Then, the Almighty Lord will declare:

"يَا مُحَمَّدُ! إِرْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ وَقُلْ تُسْمَعْ وَسَلْ تُعْطَهْ وَاشْفَعْ تُشَفَّعْ"

“O Muhammad! Raise your head, speak, you will be heard, ask, you will be granted, intercede, and your intercession will be accepted!”

This is Maqām-e-Maḥmūd (The Praised Station), where all the first and last generations will praise and glorify the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and it will become evident to all, believers and disbelievers alike, that no one holds a status before Allah as high as that of our Master (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ).

For this reason, Allah, in His Infinite Wisdom, will first direct people’s hearts to seek intercession from other Prophets. Only after they have turned away disappointed will they realise that the station of intercession exclusively belongs to the Prophet Muhammad No one else has the authority to open the door of intercession.

These hadiths are recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and are well-known among the Muslims. There is no need to mention them in full as they are very lengthy. Anyone who has even read a little should refer to the Urdu translation of Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ or ask any Muslim to read it out to them.

Additionally, in these same hadiths, it is mentioned that after one intercession, the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) will repeatedly intercede again and again for the forgiveness of sinners. Each time, Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ) will grant him intercession, and with each request, a multitude of sinners will be saved.

Besides these famous hadiths, I am compiling forty more hadiths that are less known to the general public so that the faith of the believers is strengthened, and the hearts of the deniers’ burn in the fire of rage.

These hadiths will particularly refute the corrupt distortions made by certain irreligious individuals, Godless people, and false claimants who have misinterpreted the concept of intercession and attempted to conceal their rejection of intercession under a fabricated definition.

From these hadiths, it will be absolutely clear that our Greatest Master (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) is divinely appointed for intercession, and his blessed court is the only refuge for the helpless. There is no room for the heretical claim that Allah can appoint whomever He wishes as an intercessor. These hadiths will make it abundantly clear that Allah and His Messenger (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) have openly and explicitly identified the one and only intercessor, none other than Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ).

Intercession is not just for those who accidentally commit a sin and remain fearful and regretful all their lives, as some deviants suggest. They claim that a thief who committed theft only once, repented, and remained terrified is eligible for intercession.

No! No!

By the Lord who made him the Intercessor of Sinners

His intercession is for the sinners like us, for the wretched and disgraceful, for the criminals and wrongdoers, for those drowned in sin from head to toe, for those whose sins are so great that even sin itself feels ashamed of their name.

“I fear that even the fabric of sin itself might become tainted by my misdeeds!”

Allah alone is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.

“May Allah send countless blessings and peace upon the Beautiful Intercessor (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and upon his family and companions, with thousands of honours and reverence.”

And all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”

Hadith 1 & 2:

Imam Aḥmad, with a Ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) chain, narrates in his Musnad from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا), and Ibn Mājah narrates from Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“I was given the choice between intercession or half of my Ummah entering Paradise. I chose intercession because it is more encompassing and more beneficial. Do you think it is for the pious? No! Rather, it is for the sinful, the wrongdoers, and those stained with sins.”

O Allah! Send blessings, peace, and blessings upon him, and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.”

Understanding the Prophet ﷺ’s Intercession in Light of the Qur’an

Evidence of the Intercession of the Prophet

Allāh’s name I begin with, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Issue:

What do the scholars of religion say regarding the issue of the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) being an intercessor? Which hadith establishes this? Please clarify, and you shall be rewarded.

Answer:

All praise is due to Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, and blessings and peace be upon the Bearer of Glad Tidings and the Intercessor, and upon his family and all his companions, every evening and morning.

Hearing such a question is astonishing, that Muslims and claimants of Sunnism fall into the calamity of doubting such clear beliefs! This too is a sign of the nearness of the Day of Judgement.

“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.”

The hadiths regarding intercession are not something hidden! Dozens of Companions, hundreds of Tabi'in, and thousands of Hadith scholars are its narrators. The books of Hadith, whether Ṣiḥāḥ, Sunan, Masānīd, Ma‘ājim, Jawāmi‘, and Muṣannafāt, are filled with them.

1.      Ṣiḥāḥ (Authentic Collections): These are hadith books in which only Ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) hadiths are included, such as Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.

2.      Sunan: These are hadith books arranged according to the chapters of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and contain only hadiths related to legal rulings (Aḥkām), such as Sunan Abū Dāwūd.

3.      Masānīd: These are hadith books in which the narrations of each companion (ṣaḥābī) are compiled separately, such as Musnad Imām Aḥmad.

4.      Ma‘ājim: These are hadith books in which narrations are arranged according to the names of the shaykhs (teachers of the compiler), such as Mu‘jam al-Ṭabarānī.

5.      Jawāmi‘: These are hadith books that contain narrations under eight categories, which are: Siyar (biographies), Ādāb (manners), Tafsīr (Qur'anic exegesis), ‘Aqā'id (beliefs), Fitan (tribulations), Aḥkām (legal rulings), Ashrāṭ (signs of the end times), and Manāqib (virtues of individuals or groups).

6.      Muṣannafāt: These are hadith books arranged according to the chapters of Fiqh, but they include marfū‘ (sayings of the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ), mawqūf (sayings of the Companions), and maqtū‘ (sayings of the Successors).¹

Every member of Ahl al-Sunnah, even women and children, and even uneducated villagers, is aware of this belief. The vision of Allah and the intercession of Muhammad (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) are matters that even children commonly affirm.

صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَبَارَكَ وَشَرَّفَ وَمَجَّدَ وَكَرَّمَ “May Allah send blessings and peace upon him, grant him honour, elevate his status, and bestow upon him magnificence and nobility.” May Allah Almighty forgive him,

Has compiled numerous hadiths of intercession in the treatise “Sam ‘wa ‘Ṭāah li Aḥādith al-Shaf‘āah”, summarising and arranging them. Here, I will very concisely refer to forty hadiths and, before them, recite a few Qur’anic verses on the subject.

The Qur’ānic First Verse:

قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: عَسَى أَنْ يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا ۝

*Soon your Lord will elevate you upon a station where all will praise you.*¹

In a noble habit, it was asked from the Prophet

“What is Maqām Maḥmūd?”

He replied: “(It is intercession.)”

The Qur’ānic Second Verse:

قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَى ۝

“And it is near that your Lord will certainly grant you so much that you will be pleased.”²

In Musnad al-Firdaws by Daylami, it is narrated from Amīr al-Mu'minīn, Mawl‘āAlī (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) that when this verse was revealed, the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“Then I will not be pleased if even a single member of my Ummah remains in Hell.”

“O Allah! Send blessings, peace, and blessings upon him.”

In Mu‘jam al-Awsaṭ by Ṭabarānī and Musnad by Bazzār, it is narrated from Mawlā al-Muslimīn (رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ) that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said:

“I will intercede for my Ummah until my Lord calls upon me: ‘O Muhammad! Are you now pleased? ’And I will reply: ‘O my Lord! Yes, I am pleased.’”

Third Verse:

*seek forgiveness for the sins of your close ones and the believing men and women.*¹

In this verse, Allah commands His beloved (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) to seek forgiveness for Muslim men and women. And what is intercession except this?

Fourth Verse:

*And if, when they had wronged themselves [Dear Beloved Prophet], they came to your court, then sought forgiveness from Allah, and the Messenger had prayed for their forgiveness [too], then certainly they would have found Allah to be Most-Accepting of repentance, Most-Merciful.*²

This verse commands the Muslims that when they sin, they should come to the court of the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) and request his intercession, and that if the beloved (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) intercedes, Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ) will surely forgive them.

Fifth Verse:

*And when it is said to them, “Come, the Messenger of Allah will seek forgiveness for you”, they turn their heads;*¹

In this verse, Allah describes the condition of the hypocrites, that they do not seek the intercession of the Prophet Hence, those who do not seek intercession today will not receive it tomorrow.

May Allah grant us the honor of benefiting from the intercession of the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) in this world and the Hereafter.

“May Allah send blessings upon the Intercessor of sinners, and upon his family, companions, and all his followers.”
